Lorenzo heads the field by 77 points as riders prepare to tackle the world famous yard of bricks, a track which has treated the Spaniard well in the past. Lorenzo has been the class of the field this year, bar none. With seven wins to his credit thus far and nothing less than a second-place finish all season, the young Yamaha rider has shown that he truly is the prince of MotoGP, pushing headfirst for King Rossi’s crown ever faster. He heads into Indianapolis in the best place a rider can be – fresh off of two consecutive wins, well rested and heading to a track he loves.

The Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya over the weekend saw Jorge Lorenzo’s fan club in full swing, as they prepared and carried out a well-planned programme of support for the Mallorcan in his home race.

Located in Tribune G at the Barcelona circuit, the numerous members of ‘marea X-fuera’ ensured they were both seen and heard as they cheered Lorenzo on to his fifth win of the season with a huge 150m2 banner and flags which all bore the new ‘Spartan’ logo that the Fiat Yamaha rider displayed on his helmet.

In addition, hundreds of fans were issued with black flags around the circuit and a small section of the JL99 Official Fan Club took a tour of the Montmeló paddock accompanied by the rider.

After winning two victories in a row at Silverstone and Assen, Fiat Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo will be arriving in his home city of Barcelona for Round 7 of the 2010 MotoGP Championship. With a 47-point lead in the series and the chance to please his home fans, Lorenzo will be aiming for total domination on home soil. Lorenzo will be joined by two-time Japanese Superbike Champion Wataru Yoshikawa, who is filling in on the Fiat Yamaha team for the injured Valentino Rossi. Last year it was Rossi who upset Lorenzo in front of his home crowd at Catalunya. The FIat Yamaha duo became tangled in a last-lap battle for the lead, and Rossi would go on to say that his victory over Lorenzo at Catalunya was one of his best ever wins. This year the action will be much different, however, with Rossi out of the picture still rehabbing his broken leg. After earning a win in the first Spanish round at Jerez, Lorenzo's motivation will have to be securing his second '10 Spanish GP victory, having taken the checkers at Jerez earlier this year. He has flown the Fiat Yamaha flag alone for the last three races following Valentino Rossi's accident in Mugello, but this weekend he will be joined by Yamaha's experienced Japanese test rider, Wataru Yoshikawa. The two-time Japanese Superbike Champion will be riding Rossi's M1 while the Italian is out of action, backed by Rossi's usual crew who make a welcome return to the paddock this week. Last year the Mallorcan-born Lorenzo lost out to his team-mate Valentino Rossi in a titanic last-lap battle, which Rossi named one of his best ever wins. With the Italian still out of action, Lorenzo is robbed of the chance to exact revenge on his team-mate but a second Spanish win of the season, following his victory in Jerez, would be sweet nonetheless for the 23-year-old and he will be going all out to stand on the podium once again. As one of the key test riders in Yamaha's MotoGP development programme, Yoshikawa is well acquainted with the M1-Bridgestone package. He has ridden as a wild card once previously in MotoGP, at the 2002 Motegi round, but this will be his first visit to the Montmeló circuit. The Circuit de Catalunya features one of the longest main straights in the world, watched over by a vast grandstand, which is always full to bursting from Saturday morning. “It is a beautiful track. It was very difficult in the first few laps because it was a long time since we arrived in a new track. I think it was in Misano in 2007 and that was quite easy to learn. We’ve worked really hard and I've ridden a lot of laps in order to begin to understand every corner and every straight. "Everyone thought that the injury was caused because I was training with motocross. And that is a result of my training at the tarmac using a very small motors, just 10bhp (horse power). But maybe I'm too much to risk," Lorenzo said in an interview with MCN. "It happened in the narrow path when I try to pass (Carlos) Checa. That was my first day practicing with him, and when I tried racing I actually fell off," said runner-up last season's kejuraan. Lorenzo may regret that the accident appeared prevented 100% in Losail. But it would also be a lesson to better take into account something and do not always take risks. "I think it's because my competitive instinct and maybe it was too much. It's a valuable lesson," added Lorenzo.

Motogp.com The Fiat Yamaha rider knows that he will start the season at a disadvantage due to his pre-season hand injury, but he is certain the Qatar Test will give him a chance to regain some momentum before the start of the season.

Lorenzo confident for testing comeback
Jorge Lorenzo’s pre-season was disrupted by a training accident at the start of February which resulted in a broken thumb in his right hand, but the Spanish rider is present at the Qatar Test and ready to make the most of the last chance to ride his M1 prototype before the start of the season on April 11th.
The injury forced the 22 year-old to miss the second Test at Sepang, and he has raced against time to be able to make it to the Losail International Circuit for the night test which has started today (Thursday).
Lorenzo is happy to be back in action, and will have special carbon fibre protection and a modified Dainese glove for the two days to help him make the most of the Test. He started by explaining exactly what happened with the accident that led to his injury.
“I was riding in the ex ranch of Kenny Roberts where there is now a very big dirt track, and I was riding on the tarmac. Everybody said I was injured riding motocross but it’s not true! I was injured on the asphalt with a minibike, and the track was very tight – we were riding with some riders and I made a mistake in my braking point. My front wheel went under and I broke the finger,” said Lorenzo, before discussing how he feels the enforced time out will affect him for the start of the season.
“Compared to the other riders a lot, because this year we have very little practice, only three tests. I missed one and will only do two, maybe not even two because now I’m not in 100% condition, so maybe one and a half! I will not be at the same point as most of the riders, but it’s better it happened to me two months before the Championship than one week before.”
Despite arriving in Qatar with the hand still healing, Lorenzo feels the time at the track will still be a valuable preparation. He continued: “Yes I am always confident, about myself and the bike. I think the injuries can only make you more mature, and more of a thinking person, and try to learn about these injuries and make you stronger.”
“The hand is getting better every day. I felt a big improvement after only three days, and now I don’t have that much pain when I use the hand. So every day things get easier, but for sure to ride a bike will be difficult. We will see what happens!”
Asked exactly how he thinks the injury will affect him at this Test, Lorenzo said: “I don’t know. Maybe I will struggle a lot, and I can only be 10 seconds behind the fastest time, or maybe I’ll get closer; I don’t know. On Thursday we will see. I’ll be running, doing laps, and just regaining the condition and the knowledge about the MotoGP bike.”
Looking ahead to the first race of the season at the same track on April 11th, Lorenzo offered his idea on how the 2010 World Championship could start.
“In theory, worse than last year,” he said. “But I have one year more of experience, so in theory I can be more prepared. For sure this injury will stop us a little bit, but the Championship is very long so we must be patient and keep working.”

The highs and lows of another stunning MotoGP season draw to a close this Sunday at the traditional season-ending finale at Valencia in Spain. The Fiat Yamaha Team of Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo have swept all before them this year, dominating the season by taking ten race wins between them and putting on some of the most entertaining racing displays of recent years. Rossi clinched his ninth World Championship title last time out in Malaysia and, with the Teams' title already in the bag and Yamaha looking odds-on to confirm the Manufacturers' title this weekend, the Japanese marque is hoping to take its second consecutive ‘Triple Crown,' the third since Rossi joined in 2004. A ninth world title shows that Rossi's star shows no sign of waning yet but the 30-year-old admitted in Sepang that this season has been one of his toughest, due largely to his determined young team-mate. His six wins this year are less than he has taken in any of his other eight championship-winning seasons but he will be determined to try to increase that by one and round off the season on the highest possible note this weekend by finishing on top of the podium. The Italian hero admits that the tight and twisty track is not one of his favourites but he has two wins to his name there and a further three podiums, including third place last year. Lorenzo's second season in MotoGP has been even more spectacular than his first, with four wins and some stunning battles with his much older and more experienced team-mate. The 22-year-old has never won at the Ricardo Tormo circuit but has some great memories from the track, having finished as runner-up in 2005 before clinching the first of his two 250cc titles there in 2006. The Mallorcan needs just one point from this last race in order to confirm second place in the championship, which he says will be more than enough of a prize for him in just his second MotoGP season, but he, too is determined to end the year on a high note and will be aiming for the podium at the very least. The championship will wrap up in the usual spectacular Spanish style in front of some 130,000 race-day fans, packed into the unique stadium-style surroundings of the track. The layout is characterised by a never-ending burst of tight corners connected by short straights, whilst the long penultimate looping left-hander and the fast entry to turn one contrast with the otherwise geometric flip-flop chicanes and slow speed corners of the infield.

Jorge Lorenzo will ensure that participating in the session pre-season test in Qatar. Because it is still not fully recovered from injury, the Fiat Yamaha racer not too push. Everyone expects that the rivalry between you and Valentino will be even stronger this year. How do you plan to manage it?
I think our rivalry is not personal, but just limited to the sport area. For me it is normal: we both want to win and we are in the same team. Last year we had a very polite and good relationship with the media and I expect this year to be the same again.

Who is your biggest rival this year and why?
I don’t know. Theoretically Valentino, Casey, Dani and me are the riders who are going to fight for the championship, but I am sure that it is possible that somebody else will be fighting with us for the championship. Is your aim this season to be world champion? Will you be satisfied with second place again? Yes, I would be satisfied with the second position. It is a very difficult position to get, especially now that I am riding with fantastic riders. Anyway, I want to win but I am not in a hurry to get the championship. I have to be patient.

You made a few mistakes last year, what have you learnt from them and how will you avoid making similar ones this year?
I think that last year’s problem was that all four riders were riding at their limit at every race and in that condition it is very difficult to finish the races. It is true that I made a few mistakes of strategy or concentration that I will try to avoid this year, but I am quite satisfied with my 2009 season. Your first season in MotoGP was spectacular but included a lot of injuries. After such an up-and-down first year, did you expect to be as strong as you were in your second? I hoped to be more regular and faster. Again this year I want to try to be better but you know, maybe I will not get it. And if you can’t be better, you may go down mentally, so I will try again and I will try to improve my performances.

How do you think you can improve this season? Are there any specific areas you want to focus on that will make you a stronger racer?
Yes, I really think that my starts are not the best. This winter I have been training very hard to improve this quality, because if you start well you avoid many problems…

Have you requested any developments for the M1 this year to tailor it more to your riding style?
You know, fortunately one of my best qualities is that I can adapt my riding style pretty easily, so for this reason I don’t think I have to tell many things to our engineers. I think Valentino has more experience and is a very good rider, so I have my hopes to him to develop the M1.

If you are faced with a replay of Barcelona 2009 this season, do you think you will know how to beat Valentino this time?
Well, I really don’t know what I could do if that happened again this year. One thing is what you imagine you could be doing and another thing is what you do when you are on the bike. I have seen many videos about that overtaking and maybe I could have closed the line more. But, as I said, who knows...

This year you will have a new team manager and a new data technician, do you expect any changes in the way your team works and what are you expecting from the new team members?
One of the main changes this year is the new team manager. Last two years we had Daniele Romagnoli, that was a great team manager: he worked very hard and we got very good results. For a series of reasons we had to change the team manager and now we have Wilco Zeelenberg, who may give me some good advices, that Daniele could not give me, because Wilco is a former rider and for sure he has more knowledge about racing. As you know we have a new data engineer, Davide Marelli, and I hope we will be doing a good job together.

After two seasons, do you feel as if you’re taking more of a part in the development of the bike?
Yes, I am more prepared to do this job because I have more experience and I know more about the bike. I can speak with the engineers with more knowledge about this job. Valentino continues to be the leader of the development of the M1 but Furusawa knows that I must start this difficult job as soon as possible, in the interest of Yamaha and mine.

There was speculation about your contract last year. Do you feel happy in the team at the moment?
Yes, I am very very happy. I have always been happy in Yamaha. From the first moment I joined this factory they all welcomed me like one of the family and the ambience in the garage is perfect. To me, my ideal is to be staying with Yamaha for a long time. We will see.

What do you think about some of Valentino’s comments about your future together in the team? Are you happy sharing a garage with him?
Yes, I am happy to be with Valentino. I think that with no other riders I could learn more than with him. In general we are the best team in MotoGP.

What do you think about the rookies coming into MotoGP this season?To be honest, I did not expect that the MotoGP category could be more talented that it was in the last two years, but it seems that it will be a more and more fast category next season. For sure the coming of Spies, Bautista, Barbera and Aoyama will do the show of the MotoGP even more interesting for the fans and for the riders.

Do you think Simoncelli or Spies can make as big an impact as you made in 2008?
Yes, why not? They are world champions, they are young, they are very fast and they want to be fast in MotoGP as early as possible. Maybe it will not be easy to improve my debut, because I won the pole position and I finished second in the race, but if they do not crash, they could even improve my final result

Jorge Lorenzo’s Team Manager tells motogp.com about his background, and what his targets with the Spanish rider are for their first season together in a video interview.
One of the new faces in the MotoGP paddock for the 2010 season will be Dutchman Wilco Zeelenberg, who takes control of Jorge Lorenzo’s side of the Fiat Yamaha team garage.
Zeelenberg has made the move from Yamaha’s supersport team where he won the 2009 world championship with British rider Cal Crutchlow, and is an experienced racer himself. A career which stretched from the late 80s to 1995 in the World Championship saw Zeelenberg compete in the 250cc class, taking 11 podiums and a win as he experienced almost 100 Grands Prix.
“It was of course a pity to leave supersport, but it’s a really big challenge to fight in the highest class of motorcycle racing in MotoGP. Jorge is a fantastic rider and I’m looking forward to this new season,” explained Zeelenberg. “It’s always been a pressure to get good results and to perform so I’ve been used to it since I was three years old, because that’s when I started riding myself! I don’t feel it as a pressure.”
On his return to the World Championship scene as a Team Manager, Zeelenberg added: “I left this paddock maybe 15 years ago and when I return to the GP paddock now I see many of the same faces in each pit box, a couple I actually know from the past. So it’s nice to come back.”
Moving onto his aims for the forthcoming season with Lorenzo, Zeelenberg said of the 2009 MotoGP World Championship runner-up: “He’s a very motivated and focused young kid and I think that’s one of his big advantages. We don’t have to motivate him, he is really eager to win. I think the first three or four races of the season will be very important – to perform well and not make mistakes. Valentino is a very experienced rider and he will take advantage of every mistake made by other riders. I think the young guys will push harder when they make a mistake, and at the fifth, sixth, seventh rounds they will push and maybe make even more mistakes. Jorge knows that he can beat anybody when everything is correct, but he should also understand that if not everything is perfect for that race he must be able to sit back and take a podium.”
He continued: “I think Jorge needs somebody who believes in him because there are of course two good riders in the one team. I think we need to focus on him and he has ten guys who are now really working for Jorge, and I think we should show him that. I think then he can perform as he is able to, and that will help him throughout the season. You have to perform well when it’s the right moment, and you have to make the right decision when everything is not 100%.”
Bringing a strong technical knowledge to Lorenzo’s set-up with his former experience on the bike, Zeelenberg gave his view on the 2010 version of the YZR-M1 prototype.
“The base bike is quite similar (to 2009) so we have an advantage with that I think. Each track we arrive at we can use our base set-up from last year. That means we can arrive at a track at which we won last year and start from a good base, and at a track where we had some problems we know what to adjust.”
Concluding, Zeelenberg stated his thoughts on the new rule restrictions with regards to the use of six engines across all 18 rounds of the 2010 World Championship.
“The six-engine rule is a big thing,” he added. “Everybody has really focused on that issue during the winter, so it’s a secret to say what happened! But of course that was the main priority for the factory to concentrate on.”

Q. Who is your biggest rival this year and why?
JL: I don't know. Theoretically Valentino, Casey, Dani and me are the riders who are going to fight for the championship, but I am sure that it is possible that somebody else will be fighting with us for the championship.
Q. Is your aim this season to be world champion? Will you be satisfied with second place again?
JL: Yes, I would be satisfied with the second position. It is a very difficult position to get, especially now that I am riding with fantastic riders. Anyway, I want to win but I am not in a hurry to get the championship. I have to be patient.
Q. You made a few mistakes last year, what have you learnt from them and how will you avoid making similar ones this year?
JL: I think that last year's problem was that all four riders were riding at their limit at every race and in that condition it is very difficult to finish the races. It is true that I made a few mistakes of strategy or concentration that I will try to avoid this year, but I am quite satisfied with my 2009 season.
Q. Your first season in MotoGP was spectacular but included a lot of injuries. After such an up-and-down first year, did you expect to be as strong as you were in your second?
JL: I hoped to be more regular and faster. Again this year I want to try to be better but you know, maybe I will not get it. And if you can't be better, you may go down mentally, so I will try again and I will try to improve my performances.
Q. How do you think you can improve this season? Are there any specific areas you want to focus on that will make you a stronger racer?
JL: Yes, I really think that my starts are not the best. This winter I have been training very hard to improve this quality, because if you start well you avoid many problems...
Q. Have you requested any developments for the M1 this year to tailor it more to your riding style?
JL: You know, fortunately one of my best qualities is that I can adapt my riding style pretty easily, so for this reason I don't think I have to tell many things to our engineers. I think Valentino has more experience and is a very good rider, so I have my hopes to him to develop the M1.
Q. If you are faced with a replay of Barcelona 2009 this season, do you think you will know how to beat Valentino this time?
JL: Well, I really don't know what I could do if that happened again this year. One thing is what you imagine you could be doing and another thing is what you do when you are on the bike. I have seen many videos about that overtaking and maybe I could have closed the line more. But, as I said, who knows...
Q. This year you will have a new team manager and a new data technician, do you expect any changes in the way your team works and what are you expecting from the new team members?
JL: One of the main changes this year is the new team manager. Last two years we had Daniele Romagnoli, that was a great team manager: he worked very hard and we got very good results. For a series of reasons we had to change the team manager and now we have Wilco Zeelenberg, who may give me some good advices, that Daniele could not give me, because Wilco is a former rider and for sure he has more knowledge about racing. As you know we have a new data engineer, Davide Marelli, and I hope we will be doing a good job together.
Q. After two seasons, do you feel as if you're taking more of a part in the development of the bike?
JL: Yes, I am more prepared to do this job because I have more experience and I know more about the bike. I can speak with the engineers with more knowledge about this job. Valentino continues to be the leader of the development of the M1 but Furusawa knows that I must start this difficult job as soon as possible, in the interest of Yamaha and mine.
Q. There was speculation about your contract last year. Do you feel happy in the team at the moment?
JL: Yes, I am very very happy. I have always been happy in Yamaha. From the first moment I joined this factory they all welcomed me like one of the family and the ambience in the garage is perfect. To me, my ideal is to be staying with Yamaha for a long time. We will see.
Q. What do you think about some of Valentino's comments about your future together in the team? Are you happy sharing a garage with him?
JL: Yes, I am happy to be with Valentino. I think that with no other riders I could learn more than with him. In general we are the best team in MotoGP.
Q. What do you think about the rookies coming into MotoGP this season?
JL: To be honest, I did not expect that the MotoGP category could be more talented that it was in the last two years, but it seems that it will be a more and more fast category next season. For sure the coming of Spies, Bautista, Barbera and Aoyama will do the show of the MotoGP even more interesting for the fans and for the riders.
Q. Do you think Simoncelli or Spies can make as big an impact as you made in 2008?
JL: Yes, why not? They are world champions, they are young, they are very fast and they want to be fast in MotoGP as early as possible. Maybe it will not be easy to improve my debut, because I won the pole position and I finished second in the race, but if they do not crash, they could even improve my final result.

Having flown straight back to Spain on Sunday night following his stunning ride to fourth place in Shanghai last weekend, Fiat Yamaha Team rider Jorge Lorenzo visited the Dexeus Institue in Barcelona on Monday morning for further examination by world-renowned specialist Dr. Xavier Mir.
Dr. Mir, who had only operated on Lorenzo two weeks ago to relieve compartmental syndrome in his right forearm, was keen to carry out his own diagnosis on the injuries sustained during free practice for the Grand Prix of China, which the Clinica Mobile had treated to great effect in Shanghai in order to allow Lorenzo to ride.
The injuries were confirmed to be slightly worse than first thought, especially to the right ankle, which was originally thought to have escaped fracture. A 3D CAT scan of both ankles revealed the following further injuries:

Jorge Lorenzo says he would not regard missing out on the 2010 MotoGP title as a failure because he believes this is a halcyon time for talent in the championship.
The Yamaha rider fought with team-mate Valentino Rossi for this year's title and is expected to mount an even stronger challenge next year.
But Lorenzo said he felt no shame in finishing second to Rossi in 2009, and did not assume that he would be able to go one better next season.
"I can be nothing but satisfied with my second place in the championship," he told Gazzetta dello Sport.
"It will be difficult in 2010 because [Casey] Stoner has returned stronger than ever, [Dani] Pedrosa may have a more competitive Honda, and Valentino is always there - he will be 31, that's true, but he isn't old at all. I want to be there with them.
"Many perhaps expect me to win the title [in 2010], but what happens if I don't?
"This is an extremely difficult series, and on top of that it's a time of great riders. Second place is already a fine result. Look at Pedrosa: he's been in MotoGP for four years, but he still hasn't triumphed. To do that, you need to have every aspect sorted out."
Rossi and Lorenzo will continue as Yamaha team-mates in 2010, but Rossi reckons the team will ultimately need to choose between them as he does not think giving two title rivals equal status is a sustainable situation. The Italian has hinted that he could jump ship for Ducati if Yamaha insists on keeping Lorenzo.
But Lorenzo said he was not bothered by Rossi's stance and agreed with his business manager Marcus Hirsch's insistence that the rider line-up was solely Yamaha's choice,.
"I always agree with [Hirsch] and he is right when he says that it's not up to Valentino to decide the riders for 2011," said Lorenzo. "That choice is up to Yamaha. We are just employees."
He also thinks the dividing wall in the Yamaha garage - originally created when Rossi and Lorenzo were using different tyre suppliers in 2008 but retained this season as well - is irrelevant.
"In my opinion it changes nothing," Lorenzo said. "We are two very strong riders mentally, with firm ideas, and it would be the same without the wall."
